Chapter 15

Gemma

“Wake up, sleepyhead.” A man’s loud voice startles me from a delicious dream.

I groan when I realize it’s Darwin.

“Stop it!” I complain. Jeez. It’s like high school all over again. Darwin and I lived in the same house back then. “I’m on vacation.”

“I know,” he chuckles. “But you agreed to go with us to the filming last night.”

“I changed my mind,” I grumble.

“Come on, Gem. It’ll be exciting. How often do you get the chance to be part of a film production?”

I consider it. As much as I wish to have a quiet vacation, I’ve gotten bored with just one day’s stay on the island. Going out with people might be fun. Although I’ve been to the major attractions in Panama, it wouldn’t hurt to revisit them.

I sigh and get up. “Okay. But you owe me a big one.”

My stomach flutters as I enter the kitchen, remembering what took place in the very place last night. My eyes soon find Levi and Kaitlyn sitting next to each other at the breakfast table, talking about scuba-diving. “I would love to try it. Let’s do it together so you can teach me!” the model says, batting her eyelashes. Seriously? Flirting with another guy right in front of Darwin?

But then they look right for each other. I want to slap my own face. What happened last night must’ve been a dream. I must’ve been drunk and conjured it all up.

I say hi to the two models and sit down opposite them. Levi gives me a once-over. His not-so-casual glance sends shivers down my spine. Shit. Get a grip, Gemma. He was drunk last night and didn’t mean what he said or did.

The plan of the day is first to go pick up a car at Darwin’s friend’s dealership in Panama City and then drive it around town through various sightseeing spots to film the commercial.

Shit. I can’t do it. I can’t work with Levi, not after what happened last night.

“Is it really necessary to throw in all that money?” I ask Darwin after breakfast, attempting to back out. “It’s not like your business isn’t doing well. Your dealership pretty much takes half of the commercial district in town.”

“You have no idea how competitive the market is, young woman,” he mocks me. “There are so many newcomers with foreign investment power backing them. My profits have gone down threefold last year. The old ways of advertising aren’t even working. All those community events or free testing drives don’t compare to a simple website. With inventory just a fraction of mine, my competitors are able to outperform me with their websites and YouTube videos. So I’m trying this new social media technique, and you’re going to help me through it.”

I grumble, wishing I hadn’t made the promise. What was I thinking? Obviously, I was out of my mind when I let the guy convince me of the crazy idea.

I clear my throat. “About that, Darwin. Wouldn’t it be better if you let one of the female models play the wife?”

“Out of the question,” he says adamantly.
